Nail Map

Hotel Tonight wanted a giant world map in their SF office to reference their global reach. Studio Hatch, who designed their space, suggested I make a map out of nails. I love maps, I like buying art materials at hardware stores, and I have a tendency toward obsessive, repetitive tasks. I agreed.

The finished result surprised me: how much it really works as a map, and how beautiful the nails look. The map contains just over 13,000 nails, all of which had to be washed to remove machine oil. If you have ever washed 13,000 nails, you know how much fun that can be.

I think Africa is a handsome continent.

It’s a good thing I really like maps.
